Crosswhite finds rehab success at Mi Casa Nursing Center

After fracturing her right leg in a fall, Carol Crosswhite needed rehabilitation to get back on her feet.

When she came to Mi Casa Nursing Center in Mesa, Arizona, on March 2, 2018, Crosswhite required extensive assistance for getting in and out of bed, moving from the bed to the wheelchair and was unable to put weight on her leg. She also needed assistance with daily tasks like getting dressed, bathing and grooming.

Crosswhite worked with physical and occupational therapists six days a week. Therapists used the Omnicycle seated exercise machine to help her build strength, endurance and range of motion, and they taught her scapular stabilization exercises. Physical therapists were even able to incorporate yoga to help her stretch and strengthen her hip.

Occupational therapists focused on retraining Crosswhite on her daily care activities, not only for self-care but also for home care. They helped her master the motions she needed for cooking and gardening.

"Mi Casa has an outstanding team of physical and occupational therapists," said Crosswhite. "Each therapist genuinely cares about me as a patient, and each has specific skills they used for my benefit. They worked together as a team, exchanging information and working to encourage me. Each one looked into what activities I'd be doing at home and how they could help me succeed."

"Carol was highly motivated and has been able to achieve independence with walking and all daily activities," said Collette Stockton, occupational therapist.

On May 16, Crosswhite was able to return home with full independence.
