On Dec. 3, 2016, Arthur Kidd came to Hammond-Whiting Care Center in Hammond, Indiana, for rehabilitation.
Kidd was experiencing a decline in function due to colon cancer and surgery. He also struggled with high blood pressure and heart failure. When he arrived, he had trouble walking, needed minimal assistance with most of his activities of daily living and required moderate assistance with bathing.
Physical and occupational therapists worked with Kidd five days a week to reach his goal of going home. PTs helped him regain strength, range of motion and balance. They used progressive resistance exercises with Thera-Band exercise bands, as well as exercise sessions on the Omnicycle™, a bicycle-like machine. OTs trained him in the skills he would need to live independently again.
On Feb. 13, 2017, Kidd returned home. He was able to complete his activities of daily living on his own and walk 500 feet with a cane.
"I felt the staff really wanted to help me, and that helped me succeed," said Kidd.
