After a stroke, Allen Wray came to The Lane House in Crawfordsville, Indiana, for rehabilitation.
The stroke affected Wray's left side, and he needed physical, occupational and speech therapies to regain his independence. When he arrived on Aug. 23, 2016, he needed total assistance with getting out of bed, transferring from one surface to another (such as from a wheelchair to a regular chair), walking and getting his upper body dressed.
Therapists worked with Wray five days a week. Speech therapy focused on improving his cognition, while physical therapy focused on restoring his mobility and occupational therapy focused on helping him relearn his activities of daily living, such as dressing and bathing. Therapists used electrical stimulation and strengthening exercises, as well as gait training, to help him restore independence.
"Coach really helped me!" Wray said, referring to his physical therapist, Dayanand Kiran.
Wray was able to return home on Sept. 16 and continued physical and occupational therapies as an outpatient through Nov. 4. When he completed his rehab, he was able to walk with a cane and stand-by assistance, and he was able to take care of himself better.
