Muscle weakness brought Robert Cross to Rensselaer Care Center for rehabilitation after a bout with infection.
Cross needed assistance with walking, transferring from one surface to another (such as from the bed to a wheelchair), bathing and grooming. He had trouble balancing while standing as well.
Physical therapists worked with Cross six days a week on gait training, balance and stairs, while occupational therapists met with him five days a week to help him master his self-care skills again.
"I was pleasantly surprised by all the help here," said Cross. "Everyone was great."
When Cross went home on May 20, he was able to walk up to 300 feet with supervision and was independent in balancing, transfers and hygiene. He only required supervision for bathing and dressing.
