Sandra Whitton came to Rensselaer Care Center in Rensselaer, Indiana, for rehabilitation on June 29, 2018, after she fractured her right hip in a fall.
The injury left Whitton weak and in need of moderate assistance with getting dressed. She also needed some assistance for walking, bed mobility, getting in and out of bed, standing balance, bathing and cognition.
Five days a week, physical and occupational therapists worked with Whitton to help her increase her strength, balance, range of motion and overall independence. Physical therapists did strengthening exercises with her, as well as gait training, balance activities and therapeutic activities. They also helped her increase her safety awareness. Occupational therapists helped her with her activities of daily living and taught her some compensatory strategies to help her be more independent.
Whitton also participated in speech therapy twice a week to improve her thinking skills.
"The therapy team at Rensselaer Care Center is great," said Whitton. "They really worked with me to get me where I need to be, and I am ready to go home. All of the staff treated me with respect, and I had a nice private room."
Whitton successfully returned home, independent, on Aug. 15.
