On Oct. 2, 2018, Bobbie Smith, 69, came to Life Care Center of Wichita, Kansas, for rehabilitation after a severe hip infection and stay in the hospital.
When Smith arrived, he needed moderate assistance with a lot of his activities of daily living, such as grooming, bathing and getting dressed, as well as much of his mobility, including walking, standing, bed mobility and getting in and out of bed. Pain hampered his ability to move. His condition had even affected his cognition.
Nursing and therapy worked together to help Smith heal.
The nursing staff took care of Smith's medical needs, including the specialized medications he needed for recovery.
Speech therapists taught Smith compensatory strategies to help him with his decision-making skills, and that led to improved safety awareness during daily living tasks. Occupational therapists used adaptive equipment to help him be more functional and reduce his pain during dressing and bathing. And physical therapists worked with him on improving his mobility.
On Oct. 30, Smith returned home, independent in his mobility, thinking clearly and able to take care of himself with a little supervision for bathing and dressing.
"We are very pleased with Bobbie's ability to meet his goals and return home," said Natalie Merten, director of rehab services. "We are remaining in contact to ensure a complete recovery as he continues on his IV antibiotics and home health services."
"Therapy helped me get better," said Smith. "I regained my strength."
