In 2017, Wanda Cox moved off the farm where she and her husband had raised their family and the quarter horses they used to show to a duplex in a nearby town.
It was a tough adjustment, but it was going relatively well until she fell about three weeks after the move and broke her right hip.
"I was just walking," said the petite 87-year-old. "I think it was broken before I even fell."
After her hospital stay, Cox came to Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for rehab on Oct. 28, 2017. Unfortunately, she experienced a lot of pain and was non-weight-bearing for weeks. However, the Life Care therapy team made the best of the situation by using heat therapy and stretching and exercising her extremities as best they could from prone and sitting positions.
"We were really limited by her pain, but she was very patient with us doing the same things during that time," said Jamie Cochrane, physical therapist.
As Cox progressed, Cochrane was able to add the Omnicycle™ exercise bicycle, parallel bars, weights and a four-wheeled walker to her physical therapy routine.
"I liked the walking," Cox said. "I think this is a good place for therapy. They were all friendly. They certainly get you into shape."
Cox was able to go back to her new home on Jan. 13, 2018, and continued with outpatient therapy at Life Care for several months.
