The Westchester House rehabs Thomas after heart surgery

Pat Thomas had to have a prosthetic heart valve replaced, and after surgery, she needed rehabilitation to recover strength and mobility.

On Aug. 30, 2017, Thomas came to The Westchester House in Chesterfield, Missouri. She required total assistance with her bed mobility and was experiencing some confusion. She was only able to walk 150 feet with someone to steady her, and she needed some assistance with standing, taking care of her daily hygiene tasks and transferring from one surface to another.

Thomas took part in physical, occupational and speech therapies five days a week. The physical therapy team worked with her on endurance, strength and balance. The occupational therapy team worked on activity tolerance for independence with her daily activities while being careful of her heart and chest. Speech therapists worked with her on recall and regaining her independence with managing medications and finances.

"Pat demonstrated high motivation during her treatment sessions," said Lina Palazzolo, occupational therapist assistant. "She was always willing to do anything asked of her to increase endurance and strength."

"Therapy has helped me adjust at home and gain strength after my surgery," said Thomas.

Thomas reached her goals of being independent in her activities of daily living and only requiring supervision to walk. She was thinking clearly again too and returned home on Oct. 19.
