On June 21, 2018, Daphne Wilburn came to The Westchester House in Chesterfield, Missouri, for rehab after an infection.
Wilburn had a bone infection as well as an abscess on her leg that needed specialty wound care. When she arrived at the facility, she needed active assistance to get in and out of bed, walk and get dressed.
Five days a week, Wilburn participated in physical and occupational therapies to regain her independence. Therapists used equipment such as the NuStep® seated exercise machine with foot pedals and arm cranks and the Kinesis weights machine that allows patients to work through a variety of everyday motions. She also had diathermy treatments for wound healing.
"Therapy is the biggest help," said Wilburn. "It seems like at first it's not much, but it really is. A little bit at a time makes a big difference."
"Daphne was motivated to return home and worked very hard to achieve her goals," said Allison Buehrle, physical therapist. "She always had a positive attitude and was willing to try any intervention."
The hard work paid off, and Wilburn returned home, independent, on July 29.
