Joann Miller came to Life Care Center of Banner Elk, North Carolina, on Dec. 14, 2018, to rehabilitate after having a hip replacement.
When Miller arrived, she needed help with walking, getting in and out of bed, standing up and sitting down, balance, grooming, bathing and getting dressed.
Therapists got to work to help Miller reach her goals so she could go home to her daughter. Physical therapists worked on strengthening her legs, using a stationary bicycle with hand cranks as well as seated and standing exercises. They also did balance training with her. Meanwhile, occupational therapy helped her improve her skills in the everyday self-care tasks she does at home, from showering and getting dressed to cooking.
"Joann was a hard worker and made good improvement," said Melissa Moody, occupational therapist assistant.
"Overall, I feel better about myself," said Miller. "I have no doubts that I can do everything on my own. I can walk better, and my daughter feels better about me going home. I feel more confident walking, opening the door and tending to my dogs."
Miller returned home to her daughter, independent in her mobility and activities of daily living, on Jan. 17, 2019.
