Life Care Center of Banner Elk helps Kemp recover after lumbar surgery

After being diagnosed with spinal stenosis and undergoing lumbar surgery in April 2018, Jerry Kemp began outpatient physical therapy at Life Care Center of Banner Elk, North Carolina.

When he first arrived, he needed moderate assistance with basic activities. But through physical therapy, Kemp greatly improved his mobility and independence.

Instead of using a lot of specialty equipment, physical therapists used manual therapies such as myofascial release, stretching and spinal stabilizers to improve his spinal segmental mobility and strengthen core muscles.

"I have better posture now," said Kemp. "I can stand up straighter. I have less back and leg pain, and I am able to walk further and be more active outside."

Kemp returned home on Aug. 30, 2018, with improved posture, flexibility and strength.
