Cheryl Benning began outpatient therapy at Life Care Center of Elkhorn, Nebraska, on June 13, 2016, to treat her Parkinson's disease.
Benning had therapy three times per week and started her treatment with the LSVT Global's LSVT BIG® program.
LSVT BIG uses exercise-based physical and occupational therapy to improve motor function in people with Parkinson's disease. The exercises include bigger movements with intense, high-effort practice. It also teaches how much effort is required to produce normal movements and translates bigger movements into real-world, everyday activities for a better quality of life.
Once Benning finished the LSVT BIG program, she started the Parkinson's Wellness Recovery (PWR!) program, which includes exercises to increase core strength and flexibility of trunk and legs as well as improve balance. Benning also spent time walking on a treadmill.
"Cheryl Benning worked extremely hard to regain function in areas of balance, gait and transfers," said Christine Montes, physical therapist. "She is an example of how hard work pays off."
Upon graduating on Jan. 19, 2017, Benning had improved her balance and core strength. She was able to easily get in and out of a tub and bed, and she could walk without an assistive device.
