Carollee Tucker had an active life in her community of Charleston, Oregon, when she suffered a fall that broke her left femur.
Tucker came to Life Care Center of Coos Bay, Oregon, on Sept. 1, 2018, to recover. When she arrived, she needed assistance with pretty much everything. She was unable to walk and had to have extensive help to get in and out of bed. Associates had to help her stand, bathe, get dressed and take care of her daily hygiene tasks.
Physical and occupational therapists worked with Tucker six days a week to help restore her independence. PTs focused on helping her improve her strength, mobility, balance and coordination. They used the NuStep® and Omnicycle® exercise machines, as well as stair training and obstacle training. OTs centered their treatment on helping her be able to take care of herself at home again, including being able to prepare meals.
"Since I arrived, I have set weekly goals for myself, and the therapy team has helped me to achieve each goal I have set," said Tucker. "The big one was conquering the stairs, but I did it like a champion."
"Carollee worked hard to achieve her prior level of function as she was motivated to return home," said Jessica McGrath, physical therapist assistant.
Tucker was able to move into a transitional apartment at the facility as a stepping stone toward home. She continued to work on her balance until returning home on Oct. 18.
"The staff are all so cheerful and pleasant," said Tucker. "I would not be doing as well as I am today without every single person working at Life Care, including housekeeping."
Now, Tucker is independent once more.
