Hip fracture patient walking again thanks to rehab at Alderwood Manor

Spokane, Washington, resident Gerald Francis has gone from needing two people to help him get out of bed to walking on his own.

Rehabilitation helped get him there.

After a hip fracture, Francis came to Alderwood Manor in Spokane on Jan. 17, 2018, for professional physical and occupational therapies.

Francis started out unable to put weight on his hip or walk, but the therapists helped him do his exercises as he healed so he would be ready to practice walking once his physician cleared him to do so. They used neuromuscular re-education to help him with range of motion and being able to move more smoothly, and they taught him strategies to take care of himself more efficiently.

"Gerald had a tough time initially because he was in a lot of pain and was very weak after his fracture," said Don Reiman, physical therapist. "But he stuck with it, kept working hard and eventually achieved his goal of walking and returning home with his wife."

"The therapists kept me going even when I didn't want to," said Francis. "All of them were very good and very pleasant. I am very satisfied with the therapy."

When Francis went home on March 2, he was able to take care of himself and was walking independently with a walker.
